Inspecting and Cleaning Your Air Ducts

Your heating and cooling system is one of the most important systems in the entire home. And it relies on ductwork to keep you comfortable year-round. But the more your HVAC system runs, the more dirt and debris will build up and start causing problems with air quality and efficiency. Build-up probably won’t cut off airflow entirely, but it will inhibit air movement and could cause damage to the system. That is why it is so important to always maintain your ductwork and keep up with furnace repair in Saratoga, CA. How do you know if your air ducts need attention? Here are a few instructions to help you inspect your ductwork:

Step 1: Check for Obvious Tears or Leaks

Yes, leaks will lose a lot of cold or warm air which is bad for efficiency. However, they can also pull unwanted dust and debris into the ductwork. The first thing to do is to make sure your system doesn’t have any obvious leaks or tears, paying special attention to the joints. Granted, much of your system is probably hidden within the walls of your home. But do what you can to check any visible ductwork in the attic, crawlspace, or basement. Mark obvious holes or gaps with a grease pencil so you can come back and patch them up with the proper tools. Also look for duct tape, because this should not be a permanent solution for leaks.

Step 2: Check Registers and Vents

Once you have inspected the ducts for leaks you can run your system and check all air registers and vents around your home. With the system running, see if there is any type of dust or debris blowing out. That is a sure sign you need to clean your ductwork.

Step 3: Remove Registers and Vent Covers

Turn off the system and remove the vent covers. Check to see if there is any visible dust, dander, kids’ toys, or debris that has fallen into the ductwork. Tip: use the flash and camera on your phone to take a few pictures so you can get a clear view.

Step 4: Clean the Ductwork

If you notice a little dirt and debris, use the hose on your vacuum to clear things out as best you can before replacing the covers. If you notice things like a lot of dead insects or rodent droppings, you might have a small infestation and will want to call an exterminator. Or if there is an excessive amount of dust visible in the system, you should call an HVAC professional for a thorough cleaning of the entire system. Truth is, you should get your ductwork professionally cleaned and inspected every five years to keep your heating and cooling in top shape.
