Check These Before Calling the Pros for Air Conditioning Repair

There are few things more inconvenient than coming home from work on a hot day to find the temperature inside your home resting at a hundred degrees. Clearly, the air conditioning is working poorly or isn’t working at all. Is it something you can manage yourself? Or do you need to call for professional air conditioning repair in San Jose, CA? Before picking up the phone, these are a few things you can check for yourself:

Check the Thermostat

The first thing is to make sure the thermostat is still set to the right mode. It may seem simplistic, but you would be surprised how many repair calls we get where simply adjusting the thermostat resolves the issue. Is the battery working? Is it set to cool? Is the fan on auto? Is the temperature right? Are the date and time correct? If everything appears to be working on the thermostat you can move on to the next thing.

Check the Circuit Breakers

First, check the switch for the indoor and the outdoor unit to make sure everything is on. Then check the circuit breaker. A temporary issue may have tripped the breaker. Simply switch it back on and try running the cooling system. If the issue doesn’t repeat you should be in the clear. If however, the air conditioner trips the breaker again you might have a problem with the electrical components and you should call an HVAC technician to come and check things out.

Check the Vents

If cooling issues are only happening in one area, or one room, double-check the vents. Perhaps someone accidentally closed it or something is blocking it. Removing the obstruction could be all you need to rectify the problem. And keep in mind, your cooling system is designed to cool a certain amount of space. Intentionally blocking off certain vents could create problems down the road. It is better to keep all the vents open.

Check the Air Filter

When was the last time you changed the air filter? This is one home maintenance item you cannot afford to skip. Clean filters help the system run at peak efficiency. You should be checking them every month and replacing them as soon as they are clogged. Otherwise, restricted airflow or debris in the ducts could cause a series of problems that will be expensive to repair.

Check the Outdoor Unit

Another place to look is the outside unit. This is where your cooling system releases heat back outside. If it is blocked or restricted by debris it will not function properly. Make sure it has a three-foot radius free of obstacles. Clear away any leaves, debris, grass, or yard waste. You can also turn the unit off and rinse it with a hose from top to bottom to try and clear debris away from the coils. Let it dry before switching it back on to test it.

There is only so much you can do safely. If none of these checks get your cooling system back up and running then it is time to call a professional technician for air conditioning repair in San Jose, CA.
