How to Get the Most Out of Your Furnace This Winter

Every year during the first big temperature drop of the season our technicians are busy helping homeowners stay comfortable in their homes. Don’t wait to think about your heater until the winter. With a few simple tips you can get the most from your furnace in San Jose, CA and maybe save some money.

  1. Ensure Proper OperationMany homeowners abuse their furnaces, without even realizing it. They crank the heat up to 80 degrees when it gets too cold, and then switch it back down to 65 when it gets too hot. This is bad, not only for your furnace but also your energy costs. It is better to keep the temperature set at a comfortable constant. Cranking it up will not heat the room any faster. And if the furnace is constantly kicking on and off it will wear out faster.
  2. Keep Up With Regular Maintenance
As is the case with most mechanical things, maintenance is key. It is the best way to make sure your furnace is operating at full capacity and prevent breakdowns. One easy maintenance task you can perform is checking and replacing the air filter. During the colder months you should check the filter once a month. If the filter gets clogged it can limit airflow and force the furnace to work twice as hard to keep your home comfortable. Replacing it is fairly inexpensive and a task you can perform in a matter of minutes. You should also get professional service once a year.
  3. Use a Programmable Thermostat
Set up a schedule for your furnace with a programmable thermostat. You can decide what temperature your home should be on certain days and times of the week. That way you don’t have to keep turning the thermostat up and down when you go to bed or leave for work. It will automatically lower the raise and lower the temperature and run more efficiently. And if programming isn’t your style, you can invest in a smart thermostat that learns your routines and you can operate from your phone.
  4. Keep the Air Moving
Your ceiling fans don’t need to gather dust in the winter. They can help you distribute heat around the room. Simply reverse the fan’s direction and run it on low. That way the heat that travels up to the ceiling is forced back down the walls and into the room.
  5. Register Your Equipment

Most manufacturers offer a standard warranty on parts and equipment for 5-years. What a lot of people don’t realize is they can often extend that warranty by simply registering their equipment. Check with the installer to see if you are getting the maximum warranty on your furnace.
