The cold weather season in San Jose, CA is coming to an end. But before you reach for your thermostat, there are a few things you want to do prior to turning on your air conditioning.
Check the Air Filters
Most homeowners don’t understand that their heating and air conditioning systems share air filters. So if you have been using the heat a lot this winter, you will want to take a look at your air filters. In fact, during peak usage, check your air filters once a month. And if it is clogged, change it out immediately. Otherwise, a clogged filter thick with dirt and dust will eventually suffocate your air conditioning system. It could lead to larger problems like a frozen evaporator coil, ice on the cooling lines, weak airflow, or higher than normal energy costs.
Clear Away Debris from your Outdoor Unit
The main function of the outdoor unit is to collect the unwanted heat that was removed from inside your home and dump it outside. But it can’t do that very efficiently if it is covered up. Even a thin layer of dirt can impact your system and slow things down so it cannot get rid of the heat as quickly as it should. So after a wet and windy winter, make sure your outdoor unit is clear of leaves, sticks, and debris.
Double Check the Settings on your Thermostat
You would be surprised by the number of service calls we get from people who haven’t checked this simple problem. Make sure you switch the system from heating to cooling. And also switch the fan to auto. You don’t want to turn the fan on unless you want it to constantly run. This eats up energy and can actually make your home warmer and more humid. The air conditioning system cuts down on humidity because the coils absorb moisture and heat. That is why you will see moisture collecting and dripping into a pan beneath the coils. So set the fan to auto so it will shut off between cooling cycles.
Check the Ductwork and Air Vents
Another thing you want to do is go around your home inspecting what ductwork you can see. Make sure the connections are sealed up tight and you are not losing any air through vent leaks. You should also check the air vents to make sure they are open and unobstructed. This will improve the efficiency of your air conditioning system and keep your home more comfortable on hot days.
