Pelle's Guide to Avoiding Heating Repairs

No one likes to spend money on their heating system. Especially, when we learn the cost could have been avoided or significantly lowered via proactivity.  Particularly in San Jose, repairs (of any kind) within our homes can be very expensive. After all, we do live in the “Land of the Rich and Famous.”

The team at Pelle Heating & Air Conditioning knows the “rich and famous” are a small Californian demographic. In fact, we cater to serving our neighbors: the family man, the single mom, suburbanites, big and small families, city folk, etc. Our company is fair, affordable, and wants you to get the most out of your current heater!

So, how can we help to educate our clients on prolonging the life of their heating systems? Check out our Pelle Tips to Avoiding Costly Heating Repairs!

Tip #1: Educate yourself
Yes; there are more exciting things to learn about than your heating system. (Believe me: I hand off any- and everything to my husband when it does not interest me!) But, your heating system is too important to know nothing about. Our team is more than happy to explain some of the basics—do not hesitate to call! For now, you want to commit a couple things to memory:

  1. Sounds: know what’s normal. Your heater should not turn on every 10 min or stay on for hours and hours without detecting it has reached the proper temperature. Additionally, you should never hear a grating or squealing sound (clanking, screeching, grinding, etc.) as these indicate a potentially big problem. If you can, when and if you hear any strange noises—shut off the heating system and call Pelle Heating & Air Conditioning The sooner a professional takes a look at your heating system, the less costly the repairs.
  2. Smells: your heater should not produce a foul or musty smell. Both of these indicate a potentially serious issue: singed wires or mold build-up. Again, the sooner a professional can address this, the less costly the repairs.

Tip #2: Maintenance
There is nothing glamorous about maintenance. We join the ranks of everyone in life who has ever nagged you about “taking care of your things” so they last longer: take care of your heating system! Be honest—you do not let a year pass without an oil change for your vehicle, right? Heaters work the same way. You need to keep up with regular maintenance and address anything out of the ordinary: weird noises, smells, inconsistent temperatures and airflow intensity.

Tip #3: At-home maintenance
It seems so simple and like such a small thing, but replacing the air filters for your heating system really does make a difference. Keeping clean air filters helps your heating system run more efficiently. As far as frequency is concerned, the time your filter will last depends on the brand you choose and the quality of air turnover in your home. As a baseline: check them monthly.
