At-Home Health: Your Home's Heating System

When we think about our health and the health of our families, we consider the following: food, exercise, body fat, cholesterol, blood pressure… Am I right? Surely, a few of us also consider mental and emotional health: FengShui, meditation, spiritual connectedness to a higher power, and work vs. home life balance. This is all well and good, as basic and emotional needs are supremely important.

Have you considered, though, the air quality you live and breathe every day? Here in San Jose, CA—population 1.97 million and climbing—our air quality hinges upon what we drive, eat, live in, use, etc.

So, is your central heating system protecting your family? Our team at Pelle Heating & Air Conditioning can assist you in determining your family’s at-home health, step-by-step:

1st Step: Clean air filters

This is something you can maintain yourself. Your heating system requires a clean air filter in order to operate efficiently. How often you change your filter is up to you, but we always advise our clients: the more frequently, the better! Some homes—depending on the specific health concerns or number of indoor pets—will require a new filter every 2-3 months. Does anyone in your family suffer from allergies or asthma? Are you a pet owner? Consider the amount of dander in the air that is sucked into and pushed out of your heating system—and then consider your mildly allergic family member or highly allergic friend. Clean air filters are important!

2nd Step: Clean air ducts

Most commonly, homes today have their central heating system located in the basement or garage and it functions on gas or electricity. Heat is distributed throughout the home via ducts and vents to sustain even, consistent warmth. On average, you need to schedule a duct cleaning with Pelle every three years (at the longest interval) to avoid and reduce health issues. Now, if these ducts and vents are improperly kept (full of debris or dust) your family will suffer. Common health issues associated with dirty ductwork:

  • Sinus problems and respiratory infections
  • Increased or new allergy symptoms/reactions
  • Asthma flare-ups

3rd Step: Know the signs (non-health related)

Now you know what dirty air ducts can pose to your family’s health. Before these symptoms take their toll, here are some additional signs that you need to schedule a duct cleaning with Pelle:

  • Poor airflow: is there a room or area in your home not receiving heat? There may be a blockage.
  • Visible signs: check your ducts and wipe them with a damp cloth whenever needed, then revisit within a week to determine how quickly debris is accumulating. This will help you zero-in on the potential issue when you speak with a Pelle professional.
  • Excess dust: no one likes chores. But, if the dust truly is out of control in your home—you may have dirty ducts.
