If you are a pet owner, you do all you can to keep your furry friends safe and happy. It does come with a lot of work, but it’s so worth it. Unfortunately one of the downsides of being a pet owner is that for many breeds you have to deal with pet hair. Particles and hairs from your pets are everywhere inside your home—and you can bet they get in and mess with your heating and air conditioning. So when it comes to maintaining your HVAC system, there are special considerations for pet owners. These include:

Diligently Replacing Filters

Most manufacturers say to replace your filters three times a year. If you have one or more furry pets inside your home, you will want to consider replacing the filters more often, maybe four or five times a year. It is not uncommon for hair to get matted up inside the filter and end up clogging the airflow. So check the filters regularly, clean reusable filters often, and get professional help if you encounter a problem with your furnace or air conditioning.

Regularly Cleaning Your Home

Another key to avoiding clogged filters is to stop hair and dander before it can reach it. You can use a lightweight, cordless vacuum to sweep up pet hair quickly and efficiently. Run the vacuum around the house every other day.

Brushing and Bathing Your Pet

Another good tip is to get loose hair and dander off your pet before it can spread around the house. Regular baths and brushing can help. There are even special brushes you can use for pet hair removal. Or you can schedule your pet for a visit to the groomer every few weeks.

Cleaning Your Ducts

Inevitably small particles and some pet hair will get inside the ducts and circulate through the system. To clear these out you should hire an HVAC professional every few years to inspect your ductwork. If it is warranted, they can also clean out the ducts and remove anything that has accumulated over the years. You will also be glad to know this can go a long way towards deodorizing your home as well.

Adjusting the Thermostat

While you might be most comfortable with the thermostat turned to 72 degrees, your pets can remain comfortable at a wider range of temperatures. To save on energy expenses you can easily turn off the heating or air conditioning when just your pet is at home. That said, do not turn the system off completely. This tactic will cost you more in the long run.

Fencing Off Your Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit

If you often leave your pets unattended in the backyard, then you will want to find a way to section off the outdoor unit. The barrier must be breathable and safe for your pet, but also sturdy enough to keep your pet away. The last thing you need is for a cat to claw at the fans or a dog to chew through some wiring.
