Spring is in the air, and it is almost time to retire your furnace for the season. It has done a great job keeping you warm all summer and is deserving of a long rest for the next few months. But before you send your furnace into hibernation, you want to do some basic maintenance items. It is all fairly simple, and following these small steps will save you unnecessary stress, money, and repair costs. Here is what you need to do:
1. Basic Inspection
Don’t get too technical. Just look over your furnace for any signs of damage. Specifically look for dents, cracks, rust, loose connections, or debris. If there is any damage you can call and get Sunnyvale furnace repair service right away before problems get worse.
2. Change the Filter
Your furnace has been working hard all winter long. This means your air filter is filthy, and you should replace it. That way you not only won’t forget to do it next fall but also prevent dust and debris from settling in the system over the course of the summer months. Dust will make your furnace less efficient and is also a big fire hazard.
3. Clean the System and Surrounding Area
While inspecting your furnace did you find dust, dirt, or any other junk? If so, take the opportunity to clear away the cobwebs and remove any dirt and debris. This is pretty much for the same reason as you would change out the air filter. It can be a hazard but also cut down on efficiency.
4. Shut off the Pilot Light
Where applicable, you can cut off the pilot. Simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your furnace. It should only take a couple of minutes. A burning pilot light burns fuel. It is small, but the cost is not something you need to spend the entire off-season. Just double-check to make sure the pilot light isn’t needed to heat your water as well.
5. Flip the Switch
The last step, change your thermostat to off, or from heating to cooling for the summer.
6. Get Furnace Maintenance and Repair
If you notice anything off about your furnace, the off-season is a great time to get repairs or tune-ups. Technicians will not be as busy, and you don’t need the heat to keep you comfortable. You have more time to take care of the problem. That way, your furnace is ready to go the minute temperatures drop back down in San Jose, CA.
