Can You Count On Your Air Conditioner Next Summer?

Be honest: were you comfortable in your home this past summer? Or were you a chaotic, never-acclimated mess, always sweating or shivering? Sure, California is perfect and beautiful and comfortable through the fall season and chilly in the winter. But, summer will be back before you know it and you will be uncomfortable again. Make next summer a cool, comfortable one.

In the year 2016, in the San Jose and surrounding areas, there is no need to be sweating bullets when temps are highest during the day and then freezing your way through the night when your pitiful air conditioner is finally stronger (and over-compensating) than the outside conditions.

If you are not yet convinced of considering replacing your air conditioner ASAP, review this quick checklist to see if it is, in fact, time to start considering a replacement.

  1. Consider the age of your current AC unit
This is pretty critical. The average lifespan is somewhere between 10-15 years. As units age and pass this decade mark, they can start to degrade in quality and efficiency; which unfortunately translates to discomfort for you physically and monetarily.
  2. Take a look at your utility bill
Heating and cooling costs should only 44% or less of your total utility bills. If you notice this begin to climb and you have not changed anything, or if you know you are spending more than this, you are losing money and will continue to do so more rapidly as the air conditioner weakens further.
  3. Frequent repairs?
I get it—a totally new system is more money up front than a repair. Do not let yourself become short-sighted, though. Apply the same rule-of-thumb to your AC unit as you would your vehicle: when you find yourself spending more on repairs than seems to be worth the money, it’s time.
  4. Programmable thermostats
If you are anything like the average American, you are away from home for long stretches of time. Do you travel or work full-time or do you like to be outside enjoying the San Jose weather while you can? Good. But, if your air conditioner does not have a programmable thermostat, you are literally paying to keep your furniture chilled in your absence. Google how much you can save by having an AC unit that fluctuates based on your needs (it’s shocking).
  5. Temperature inconsistencies
Are one of the rooms in your home extra chilly or super-hot by comparison? No, it is not a ghost. This could mean your current AC is malfunctioning. Do some research and refer to #3: is another repair worth the cost?

How much of this checklist applies to your current AC unit? Truly, if any of these rings true for you, call Pelle Heating & Air Conditioning, your local San Jose air conditioning experts. There is no need to be uncomfortable or to continue to lose your hard-earned money on an inefficient and tired air conditioner.
