The weather in San Jose, CA is fairly moderate. However, there are days when the heat outside spikes up in the summer time. You want to keep cool and comfortable inside your home. And nothing accomplishes that better than an efficient air conditioner.
It is a wonderful invention, but is often taken for granted. Your air conditioning unit isn’t something you can neglect for months and expect it to work perfectly the moment your turn it on. One thing you can do is routinely change the air filter. Not sure how to do it? Here are some steps to follow.
Why Change the Air Filter?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors. Unfortunately the air quality inside is more even more polluted than air outdoors. Fortunately you can reduce air pollutants and improve the efficiency of your a/c unit by replacing the filter. While some units vary, for optimal performance you should replace air filters every month.
Changing the Filter in Air Conditioning Units
Here are the steps to follow:
- Find the Filter
To change an air filter you first need to locate it. With the air conditioning running put a large piece of paper against the strip metal covering. You should be able to feel it getting pulled in with the air. If it is pulling in air then you have found the return arid duct. Use a flashlight to confirm this is where the filter is located.
- Shut it Down
Next, turn off the unit for safety and to keep the old dust out. You should have a switch near the furnace, thermostat, or power breaker. Make sure it is switched off and listen to confirm the motor has stopped.
- Take Measurements
Once the furnace is off carefully check the old filter and get the measurement. It should look something like this: 8x16x1. If there this is your first use and there happens to be no filter you can take measurements of the area and find the closest fitting filter. You want to be sure and get the right size, otherwise your air conditioning will perform like there is no filter at all.
- Pick a New Filter
There are several options available to you. You can choose the best type of filter for your home as long as it is the correct size. Want a disposable fiberglass filter? How about a pleated filter that can eradicate more airborne pollutants and allergens? Or what about a washable electrostatic filter? Read about each product, or ask a professional, and find the best option for your home.
- Carefully Remove Old Filter
When removing the filter, take care not to accidentally dump dust into the unit. Once the filter is out you also want to clean the area with a cloth.
- Place the New Filter
Check the airflow on the new filter. There should be an arrow on the frame of the filter showing you which direction it should go.
